Kenmare Electoral Area Debate – May 7th, 2024
Some of the candidates running in the Kenmare Local Electoral Area for the June 7th local elections took part in today’s debate. In studio with Jerry was Podge Foley Independent, independent councillor Johnny Healy-Rae, Fianna Fáil councillor Norma Moriarty, Stephanie O’Shea of Sinn Féin and Teddy O’Sullivan Casey of Fine Gael. An inquest jury returned a verdict of death by medical misadventure for 16-year-old Aoife Johnston who died in December 2022 at University Hospital Limerick after she was left 12 hours before seeing a doctor. Witnesses described the facility as a ‘warzone’ on the day she presented at the emergency department. Jerry spoke to Fine Gael councillor for the Newcastle West Municipal District, John Sheahan, who’s a member of the Regional Health Forum West. He also spoke to Fianna Fáil councillor Norma Moriarty for the Kenmare Municipal District who’s a member of the Regional Health Forum South.

Education Minister and Fianna Fáil TD Norma Foley spoke to Jerry ahead of her party’s Ard Fheis this weekend. As Minister for Education, she has announced new anti-bullying measures for schools. Jerry also asked her if Fianna Fáil plans to run a candidate in the Kenmare Local Electoral Area to replace Cllr John Francis Flynn who won’t be contesting June’s elections. Fianna Fáil’s two other councillors in the Kenmare Municipal District, Michael Cahill and Norma Moriarty are running.
