Cllr Mikey Sheehy has been elected as the new Mayor of Kerry.
The Fianna Fáil councillor for Tralee was elected unopposed at the council’s AGM in Áras an Contae today.
He replaces outgoing Mayor, Cllr Michael Foley, as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council.
Cllr Mikey Sheehy was proposed as the county’s first citizen by his party colleague Cllr Norma Moriarty and seconded by Fine Gael councillor Bobby O’Connell.
Cllr Sheehy was first elected to Kerry County Council in 2019 and topped the poll in the Tralee MD in the 2024 local elections.
He has served as Mayor of Tralee on two occasions and it’s his first time to serve as the Mayor of Kerry.
Cllr Sheehy listed affordable and private housing; healthcare; accessibility; the Kerry welcome; and focusing on people, place and delivery as his priorities as Mayor.
Meanwhile, Listowel councillor Jimmy Moloney was elected as Deputy Mayor at the council’s Annual General Meeting.
Cllr Moloney was nominated by his Fianna Fáil colleague Cllr Niall Kelleher and seconded by Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald.
