Radio Kerry understands that at least six IPAS residents in Cahersiveen have had their departure delayed.
The majority of nearly 200 people seeking international protection had been due to leave their accommodation at the Skellig Star hotel today.
It’s understood their departure is scheduled for 2pm.
Cllr Norma Moriarty says six residents who are studying to be health care assistants are being allowed to stay and complete their studies in Cahersiveen.
This also includes their families.
These students are due to graduate later this month.
Skellig Star residents who have medical needs may also have their departures delayed.
The Department of Justice, which oversees accommodation for asylum seekers, had announced that most of the residents at Skellig Star, Cahersiveen – 159 people including children under the age of four – were to move today to other IPAS accommodation.
A new group of international protection applicants would then be moved to the centre in Cahersiveen.
The department says the IPAS resident welfare team is liaising with centre management and residents to identify particular considerations such as people with medical needs or those sitting exams.
The Department of Justice says while IPAS recognises that people may be integrating into the community, attending education or working, given the dispersed nature of available accommodation options, new accommodation may not be available in the same area.
