A windy afternoon meant quality football was at a premium, but both sides should be applauded for their efforts. Lios Póil had beaten Sneem-Derrynane a fortnight ago in the quarter-final and also had a West Kerry championship game (a loss) against neighbours Annascaul.
Cromane got first wind in breezy Keel and led by 1-1 to no score after five minutes with Sean O’Sullivan notching our first goal.
Lios Póil then took over and proceeded to kick the next five points - the highlights being fine scores from Gareth Ó Nuanáin and, just before the first water break, from Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin to give Lios Póil a 0-5 to 1-1 lead. They held this advantage until the break, leading by 0-7 to 1-3.
Two quickfire Donnchadh Walsh points edged us back in front before points from Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin and Maitiu Seán Ó Grifín restored the West Kerry men’s one-point lead. A Darren Houlihan free levelled matter again in the 40th minute before a fumbled ball under the Cromane crossbar gave Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin a tap-in goal for Lios Póil right on the second-half water break. Lios Póil were now in a good position leading by three, 1-9 to 1-6.
However, we came out from this water break and dominated most of the possession from here on in as they would outscore their opponents by 3-3 to 0-1. Our half-back line at this stage featuring Brice Dourieu, Kieran O’Sullivan, and Brendan Foley started to dominate and mopped up a load of ball around midfield where Liam Walsh also started to make an impression.
A Mikey Houlihan goal, expertly dispatched at the far post after a fine Kieran O’Sullivan run got the Mid Kerry men back on track. Lios Póil did edge in front with five minutes left with another fine Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin point but this was to be their last score. A Darren Houlihan goal for Cromane (now positioned on the edge of the square) with three minutes rocked Lios Póil and when our evergreen duo of Donnchadh Walsh and Sean O’Sullivan added rapid points the game was done. A fourth Cromane goal from Danny Shea put a gloss on the score for us after what was a hard-fought win.
