Played in wintery conditions at Paddy O Leary Memorial Park Gneeveguilla the home side got off to a dream start as Shane Crowley applied the finish to a fine sweeping move and goaled inside the first minute.
John O Leary (f) and Pádraig Doyle added further points as the home side made the most of the elements.
Rathmore opened their account with a Brendan O Keeffe point from distance before Mark Reen pointed.
Rathmore were now applying pressure and only a dramatic last gasp clearance from corner back Eoin Fitzgerald prevented a certain goal.
John O Leary then pointed a free for Gneeveguilla and Sean O Keeffe added a point from play.
Chrissy Spears answered with a point from a free before Gneeveguilla again took the game to their opponents and added two fine points from Pa Warren and Padraig O Connor.
Chrissy Spears had the final score of the half, a plcaed ball to leave Gneeveguilla lead 1.6 to 0.4 at the break
Gneeveguilla’s John O Leary opened the second half scoring, before Shane O Sullivan fielded a high ball and was pulled down for a penalty, Rathmore defender MJ Kelliher received a black card for the foul. Cornelius Buckley calmly dispatched the spot kick low to the net.
Chrissy Spears replied with a pointed free for Rathmore.
Cornelius Buckley cancelled that out with his own placed ball effort to give the home team a nine point lead.
Rathmore were now to enjoy a good period of play and took the game to their neighbours, Anthony Darmody and John Moynihan both kicked fine points from play. As did Shane Ryan sandwiched between two Chrissy Spears frees which reduced the gap to four points with six minutes remaining.
A fine point from Substitute David Dineen set up a grandstand finish in front of a huge crowd.
Chrissy Spears then added a further point from a free and Aidan O Mahony pointed from play to leave the minimum between the teams.
A brave Gneeveguilla defended with determination in the closing stages and did enough to win the day despite not scoring for the last 27 mins in tough conditions.
Best on the day for Gneeveguilla were Man of the Match DJ Murphy, Eoin Fitzgerald and Pa Warren at midfield, supported well by John O Leary and Pádraig Doyle in attack.
Best for Rathmore were Anthony Darmody, Aidan o Mahony Brendan O Keeffe Shane ryan and Chrissy Spears was accurate from placed balls.
