Taoiseach says online abuse directed at murder victim Jamey Carney not acceptable
The Taoiseach in the Dáil addressing reports of online abuse directed at Jamey Carney who was murdered in Killarney

The Taoiseach says online abuse directed towards murder victim Jamey Carney is not acceptable and says there has to be a zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour.

The 43-year-old who was a native of New York was found dead at her home in the Killarney last week.

28-year-old Ahmad al-Saqar is a person of interest to the investigation; he left Killarney before her body was discovered and has since been detained in Jordan.

Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly says following Ms Carney’s death, abusive comments were directed towards her on social media.

He raised the issue in the Dáil and asked how such comments are allowed on social media platforms:

In response, Taoiseach Mícheál Martin said violence against women is excessive and is a significant crisis in modern-day society.

He said social media platforms have obligations and they should act quickly to withdraw such abusive material.

The Taoiseach says this type of online content compounds the suffering Jamey Carney’s family is experiencing:
