Planning has been granted for a new river walk and recreation area in a North Kerry village.
Asdee Community Development secured planning for the new walkway from the handball alley, which it described as a much-needed amenity for the community.
The development in Asdee will include an amphitheatre, a playground, sensory garden, public seating areas, an outdoor exercise area, new public car park, a pedestrian walkway and a new footbridge.
In its planning application, Asdee Community Development said the riverwalk would provide a beautiful, safe amenity for people of all ages, passing the waterfall from where Asdee gets is name in Irish – Easa Duibhe, 'The Plain of the Black Waterfall’.
The group says the long-term aim is to create a loop walk from the village, along the river to the Shannon Way Trail.
Asdee Community Development also said the recreation area would provide a safe play area and meeting place for the children and young families of the area.
The group says it’s working closely with agencies to ensure the amenity sets a high standard for promoting biodiversity with wildflowers, pollinators, and a nature pond.
The riverwalk development came off the back of the community group’s five-year socio-economic development plan for Asdee, created in 2020.
That community plan to revive the Asdee area led to the development group winning Ireland’s first International Association of Facilitators Facilitation Impact Award.
Planning was granted for the riverwalk development subject to 12 conditions.
