Over 63,000 Kerry people indicate they can speak Irish in Census 2022

Kerry people were among the highest percentage who spoke the Irish language “very well” in Census 2022.

The figures released by the CSO, show that 12% of people in the county indicated they speak the language to a high level.

Nationally, the number of people who indicated that they could speak Irish increased by 6%, to over 1.8 million people.

According to Census 2022, 40.4% of respondents who completed the question on the Irish language, indicated they could speak Irish.

Almost 63,000 (62,877) people in Kerry indicated they could speak the language.

Over 7,700 people responded saying they could speak Irish very well, of these just below 3,300 (3,279) were male, while almost 4,500 (4,430) were female.

20,730 people in the county indicated they could speak Irish well; including over 11,800 (11,837) females and almost 9,000 (8,893) males.

Over 32,500 (32,530) respondents in Kerry said they could not speak the language well, of these 15,206 were males, while 17,324 were females.

Meanwhile, just under 2,000 (1,908) of those who responded in the county, did not state their level of Irish - of which 995 were female and 913 were male.
