The N71 Killarney to Kenmare road has reopened to traffic.

However, the road may have to close again due to the potential for further fire activity in the area.

The area around Five Mile Bridge was affected by the fire that started on Tuesday evening, and flare-ups earlier today required the Killarney to Kenmare road to be closed between 2-5pm today.

A helicopter was re-engaged by the NPWS to take water and dampen ground that was affected.

The area is being kept under review by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Kerry County Council, with some evidence of fire in remote areas, and underground fire.

Vincent Horgan, Acting Director of Roads Maintenance and Operational Services at Kerry County Council, has this update:

Vincent Horgan thanked the emergency response teams involved, and is reminding the public not to light fires in public places.
