The N71 Killarney to Kenmare Road has been closed until further notice due to ongoing fire prevention operations in the area around Five Mile Bridge.

Potential wildfire flare-ups in the Five Mile Bridge area have closed the road once again.

That's according to an advisory issued by Kerry County Council.

The N71 Killarney to Kenmare Road closed at two o'clock this afternoon.

Killarney Gardaí say the road is scheduled to reopen at around 5PM.

The area around Five Mile Bridge was affected by the fire that started on Tuesday evening and was brought under control later that night.

Members of the Kerry Fire Service spent nearly seven hours battling a blaze at the location, which damaged around 25 hectares of Killarney National Park.

It's being actively monitored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Kerry County Council (KCC).

Flare-ups have since occurred in this area and some are in difficult to reach locations.

These now require a fire response.

The helicopter has been reactivated and will assist in reaching remote locations.

A spokesperson says no new areas have been effected by the flare-ups and they are contained.

As a safety precaution, the council says preventative measures will continue, including helicopter activity taking water from the lake to dampen ground.
