Ireland should act fast to seize export opportunities under the EU-Vietnam trade deal, according to Kerry MEP Seán Kelly.

The Ireland South MEP says trade will be an essential factor in global economic recovery, and finding new markets for Irish products will be important in the wake of COVID-19 and post-Brexit.

Mr Kelly, who’s a member of the European Parliament's Trade Committee and standing Rapporteur for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations region, feels Ireland should focus on getting a firm foothold in the market early.

He says Vietnam has a rapidly growing middle class, and believes that will equate to an increase in western living trends and adoption of some western eating habits, which bring with it export opportunities for Irish businesses.

The EU-Vietnam trade deal comes into force this weekend, and Mr Kelly says it’ll make it easier for Irish exporters of dairy and livestock food products to develop further infiltration into markets in Southeast Asia.
