40% of septic tanks in Kerry failed inspection last year.
The figures from the Environmental Protection Agency show that 65 inspections were carried out by Kerry County Council last year; the council was tasked with conducting at least 59 inspections last year.
95% of legal cases were taken by just four local authorities: Kerry, Wexford, Mayo and Limerick.
The figures also found that 86% of failures, identified between 2013 and 2024, were fixed in Kerry by the end of last year; this is classed as a high fixture rate of Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems.
Nationally, more than half of sceptic tanks failed inspection last year; almost 1 thousand 400 inspections were carried out by local authorities in 2023.
The EPA figures show that 82 per cent of failures between 2013 and 2024 were fixed by the end of last year.
