Kerry councillors will write to the Education Minister requesting practical life skills be added to the school curriculum.
It follows a motion at the recent full meeting of Kerry County Council by independent councillor Podge Foley.
He says the addition of practical education - like growing vegetables and cooking - would be invaluable life skills, especially for secondary school students before college.
Cllr Foley said it’s vital children learn how to grow their own food.
The Killorglin based councillor added that this may lead to an increased interest in growing veg, which is important given there are only around 60 commercial growers left in Ireland.
The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor, Angie Baily.
