RUGBY

Fergus McFadden is unlikely to get the Leinster farewell he’d wanted.

The Ireland international has suffered a calf injury in training, and will miss the next six weeks.

McFadden is due to leave the province at the end of the season, but could have already played his final game.

Should his recovery go to plan, he could be fit for a potential Heineken Champions Cup semi-final but it’s unlikely he’d be risked.

Leinster centre Conor O’Brien will miss the next few months after undergoing surgery on a long-term hamstring problem.

Former Republic of Ireland full-back Stephen Ward has a new club.

The 34-year old has joined English League One side Ipswich after his contract expired at Stoke.

Manchester City will build a statue of David Silva to honour his time at the Etihad Stadium.

The Spaniard has left the club after ten seasons, where he won every domestic English honour including the Premier League title four times.

City previously announced they're erecting a sculpture of former captain Vincent Kompany, with both to be unveiled next year.

TENNIS

Simona Halep says she’s putting her health first by pulling out of the US Open.

The women’s world number-2 is just the latest big name to make themselves unavailable for the Grand Slam in New York.

The tournament gets underway behind closed doors a fortnight from today.

Halep’s withdrawal means that just four of the current women’s top 10 are left to compete at Flushing Meadows.

RACING

Kevin Brouder quickly added to the previous week’s gains with success on the James Nash-trained Little Brother in the opening three-year-old maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe on Monday.

There was loads of pre-race market confidence behind the Curragh runner and he didn’t disappoint at odds of 9/2, reversing Roscommon form with the Joseph O'Brien-trained Calidus Mirabilis to score by a length and a half in the colours of the Little Brother Partnership.
