She has been named locally as Aoibheann Duffy.

Aoibheann was in fifth class in Ardfert National School and her principal Betty Stack says they are remembering Aoibheann as an active, outgoing, fun-loving girl who was always smiling.

Ms Stack says Aoibheann was always kind and considerate of others and says everyone is deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy; she says Aoibheann will be greatly missed by everyone at the school and sends their sympathy to Aoibheann's family and friends.

Ardfert NS has implemented a Critical Incident Management Plan and psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) are supporting and advising teachers in their efforts to assist all students and their parents; Ms Stack is asking that the school's privacy be respected during this difficult time.

Kerry County Councillor for Sinn Féin, Deirdre Ferris, lives in Ardfert and has extended her sympathy to Aoibheann's family:
