Tralee District Court has heard a woman who has been remanded in custody with consent to bail won’t sign the bail bond.
67 year-old Iryna Kulyk who is a Ukrainian national, appeared in person before Judge David Waters recently.
She was arrested in Kenmare Bay Hotel on May 27th on charges of assault and assault causing harm.
At the previous court sittings, Iryna Kulyk was remanded in custody to Limerick Prison with consent to bail, subject to a number of conditions.
The 67-year-old, who is a Ukrainian asylum seeker, was advised that she would be released on bail if she signs the bond.
At Tralee District Court, her solicitor, Brendan Ahern outlined to the judge that his client is not willing to sign the bond, as she does not understand what it is.
Through an interpreter the judge told Ms Kulyk all she needs to do is sign the bail document and she will be released, adding he can’t make it any clearer than that.
Sergeant Stephen O’Brien told the court that he understands summary disposal has been indicated by the DPP in relation to the charges of assault and assault causing harm - which means the case can be dealt with in the district court.
The judge was asked if there was a possibility to expedite the trial if a plea was indicated; before the case was adjourned for clarity on summary disposal.
Judge Waters further remanded Ms Kulyk in custody with consent to bail, to appear before Tralee District Court on June 25th for DPP directions.
