Swift nesting spots in Killorglin have increased 8 fold in the last 9 years.
That's according to the 2025 swift surveys in Kenmare and Killorglin, which are highlighting the success of community led conservation efforts.
Between 2016 and 2025, the number of active nests in Killorglin has grown from just three to 24.
Common Swifts in Ireland are experiencing a "massive decline," with population drops of up to 69% since the late 1990s.
This has led to the birds being listed on Ireland's Birds of Conservation Concern Red List.
Across the county, new swift nest box projects are helping to create safe nesting spaces for the migratory birds, including a new installation at Tralee Fire Station.
Projects are also underway in Killarney, Sneem and Kenmare, funded by the The Heritage Council which supports the Kerry Swift Project.
