Six drink or drug driving arrests in Kerry as Gardaí mount extra checkpoints

Six people were arrested in Kerry over the past week on suspicion of either drink or drug driving.

A further 51 drivers were caught either speeding, driving while on a mobile phone, or not wearing a seat belt during this period.

In what was a busy week for Kerry's Garda Roads Policing Unit, 42 pre-planned checkpoints were mounted in different locations around the county.

In addition to the drink and drug driving arrrests, 51 drivers were issued with fixed charged penalty notices for a range of offences, which carry fines and penalty points.

A number of motorists were also apprehended for not having children correctly strapped in, while travelling in a vehicle.

Four cars were seized in Kerry during this period after new Garda technology detected drivers without tax, insurance or an NCT cert.

Sgt Fidelma O'Leary from Listowel Gardaí says motorists can expect to regularly encounter checkpoints in the coming weeks.

She warned motorists to never drink and drive, and to be mindful that alcohol may still be in their system, the morning after a night out.
