Seven Kerry drinking water supplies were on the EPA’s Remedial Action List at the end of last year.
That’s according to the Drinking Water Quality in Public Supplies Report 2024, which was published by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The report from the EPA shows that seven drinking water supplies in Kerry were on the Remedial Action List as of the end of last year.
The supplies listed serve a population of over 31,500 (31,585) across the county; and include – Minard, Cahersiveen, Caragh Lake, Listowel Regional Public Water Supply, Kilgarvan, Lyreacrompane, and Mid Kerry/Gearha.
The EPA identified a crypto risk and THM risk in the Cahersiveen supply and proposed the installation of UV disinfection and of GAC post slow sand filtration; Uisce Eireann proposed a completion date of March 2025 for these works.
In Minard an upgrade of the water treatment plant was required and a completion date is to be submitted by Uisce Éireann.
The water treatment plant in Caragh Lake also needed to be upgraded and that’s due to be completed by December this year.
In Kilgarvan GAC posts slow sand filters were installed; the EPA report says that work is complete and the verification data is being collected.
The report shows an action programme is being defined to be submitted by Uisce Éireann for the Listowel Regional Public Water Supply, while the EPA proposed developing new groundwater sources and the upgrade of the water treatment plant at Lyreacrompane which is due to be completed by December 2029.
The Mid Kerry/Gearha supply needs UV installation and a date of December 2028 has been proposed for these works to be completed.
