The number of patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry dropped by almost a quarter in a year.
That’s according to figures from the Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation for June.
The figures show fewer than 200 people were waiting on trolleys in UHK during the sixth month of 2026.
Nationally, 9,612 patients were admitted to hospital without a bed during June, an over 20% rise on the same month last year (when 7,989 were on trolleys).
Of these, 196 were waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry throughout June 2026.
That’s an decrease of 24.3% when compared to the same month last year, when 259 people were waiting for a bed at UHK.
The figure stood at 376 in 2024, there were 274 patients without a bed in 2023, and a further 345 people waited on trolleys in UHK during June of 2022.
June 2021 saw the lowest number of patients on trolleys at the Tralee hospital on record, with 50.
Back in 2016, 105 patients waited for a bed in University Hospital Kerry during the sixth month of the year.
When compared with this year, it represents a jump of 87% in the decade.
