The Mayor of Tralee says smaller events will be held over the summer in the county town.

It follows the announcement that the Rose of Tralee International Festival has been cancelled for the second year in-a-row due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was cancelled for the first time in its history last year.

Rose of Tralee International Festival CEO, Anthony O'Gara says their responsibility to support the efforts to safely steer communities out of the pandemic means the festival, which attracts large crowds, can't go ahead this year.

Although immensely disappointing, Mr O'Gara said they are confident this is the right decision and organisers are looking forward to coming together to celebrate in August 2022.

Host of the Rose of Tralee television selection, Daithí O Sé told Deirdre Walsh on Talkabout he is most gutted for the people of Tralee that the event is not going ahead again this year:

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O'Brien said it was clear every effort was made to host the event this year but for very understandable reasons, it isn't possible.

The Labour councillor said everything will be done to hold smaller events over the summer and although not a substitute for the Rose of Tralee will help make the most of the summer ahead as the pandemic situation improves.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen also expressed disappointment at the announcement but said he and everyone in the county is looking forward to the 2022 festival.
