Killarney retains top 10 spot in latest national litter survey

Killarney has retained its place among Ireland’s cleanest towns in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey.

The town ranked ninth out of 40 towns and cities surveyed, down slightly from seventh in the previous report, but remains classified as cleaner than European norms.

An Taisce praised Killarney’s strong performance, noting there were no heavily littered sites.

Main Street, Park Road, Muckross Road and Knockreer Playground were among the areas singled out for praise.

The JYSK site was again identified as moderately littered, although inspectors noted an improvement compared with previous surveys.

Meanwhile, Tralee ranked 20th nationally, down from 16th in the previous survey in Janurary, and was again deemed clean to European norms.

Inspectors reported improvements at Daly’s Lane, which had been highlighted as the town’s most heavily littered site in the last survey.

The Mall and High Street received particular praise, while Tralee Train Station was identified as the town’s most heavily littered location.

Nationally, Sligo topped the rankings, while Limerick City Centre was the only area classified as littered.

IBAL says Ireland now has fewer littered areas than at any point in the past 25 years, although litter from coffee cups, cigarette butts, plastic bottles and and drinks cans remains a concern.
