The landscape around the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig changed vastly between votes taken by Killarney councillors.
That’s according Kerry Independent Alliance councillor and Leas-Chathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, John O’Donoghue.
It’s after all seven councillors voted against recommendations for the Lewis Road site at a recent special municipal district meeting,.
In February councillors unanimously approved planning permission for the building, which was purchased from the Franciscan Friars in late 2019.
However, Killarney councillors made a U-turn on this decision and tabled a joint redevelopment proposal.
Cllr O’Donoghue says he wouldn’t consider the votes to be the same thing given the changing landscape.
Killarney councillors said a meeting with the HSE was key to their decision to reverse their decision in February..
Councillor Niall Botty O’Callaghan says the Health Service advised them it had a plan B for a primary health care centre in the town.
He believes given this, the Áras Phádraig site would be more suited for dedicated civic amenities including a library, theatre and youth club.
