Kerry's first community-owned pub to open in Dromid soon

The doors of Kerry's first community-owned pub and shop are set to open soon.

Forbairt na Dromoda Teo, a community social enterprise based in the Iveragh Gaeltacht, has agreed to purchase The Inny Tavern bar and foodstore.

The business in Cillín Liath, Mastergeehy, had been on the market for over two years.

The local community bought The Inny Tavern with funds raised through a major online crowdfunding campaign, which brought in nearly €108,000.

Forbairt na Dromoda plans to preserve the pub and shop as a community-owned cultural and social hub, even if it is not commercially viable.

It also intends to provide postal services.

Eimear Ní Mhurchú, Bainisteoir of Forbairt na Dromoda, said it is striking that the GoFundMe campaign received national and international donations from people who had lost their own local pub and wanted to support the initiative.

She added that groups from other rural communities facing similar challenges have approached them for advice.
