The Kerry branch of the Green Party says the removal of trees from a Tralee road during nesting season is deeply concerning.

It was announced last week that the poplar trees, which line the Tralee Harriers grounds on Dan Spring Road, are to be felled and replaced on health and safety grounds.

Kerry County Council says this was done in accordance with the Wildlife Acts and following consultation with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Tralee Green Party representative Anne-Marie Fuller says Kerry County Council is sending the wrong message to landowners by felling trees during nesting season.

She adds the felling is causing huge distress to local residents, and the council should be ready with native replacements before any tree is cut for safety reasons.
