Kerry Fine Gael is holding a convention today to choose a replacement for a vacant seat on Kerry County Council.
Mike Kennelly, from Listowel, stepped down after being elected to Seanad Éireann in January.
When a councillor steps down, their seat is filled through a process known as co-option.
Under this system, the outgoing councillor’s political party nominates a successor, who is then formally appointed by a council resolution and serves until the next local election.
Fine Gael stopped accepting nominations for potential candidates two weeks ago.
As the only nominee, Senator Kennelly's daughter, Aoife, will be co-opted into the seat for the Listowel Municipal District by default.
The convention takes place at three o'clock this afternoon (Sunday, 13th April 2025) in the Listowel Arms Hotel.
MEP Seán Kelly will serve as guest chairperson.
