A consultant physician in infectious diseases, who's from Tralee, says Ireland's vaccination programme is offering better protection against the highly-infectious Delta variant of COVID-19.

President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Professor Mary Horgan says unlike in the UK, we  didn't space out the gap between vaccination doses.

People who're fully vaccinated have very high protection from the Delta variant, while the level of protection is less for those who've received one dose.

She says we're already seeing the benefits of this strategy in Ireland with fewer people in hospital and fewer COVID-19 related deaths:

The consultant physician in infectious diseases and internal medicine at Cork University Hospital says wearing masks, washing hands, avoiding crowded areas and reducing contacts are still key.
