An Ireland South MEP is calling on the government to to access an EU fund to support Fastway workers who have lost their jobs.
The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF) was set up by the European Union to support to workers who have been made redundant as a result of trade liberalisation.
The aim of the fund is to allow workers to remain in employment or find a new job quickly, through services including counseling, career advice and several forms of training.
MEP for Ireland South, Kathleen Funchion has pointed out that workers are very reliant on public policy to protect them when parent companies decide to make cuts.
She feels that the Fastway layoffs are a key example of this.
The Sinn Féin MEP says the government must urgently assess if the fund is applicable to Fastway staff and contractors, to mobilise the fund as fast as possible to help those affected.
