Killarney councillors will write to the Diocese of Kerry requesting a memorial plaque be erected at St Mary’s Cathedral.
It follows a motion from independent councillor Martin Grady at the recent Killarney MD meeting.
He said there is currently a small monument in memory of the children buried at the grounds, but doesn’t believe this is enough; adding a large marble cross once stood at this location.
Cllr Grady outlined that the cathedral building was used as a shelter and hospital for five years during the famine, and many children were buried at the tree of light.
He believes what’s there is not sufficient and an appropriate plaque or monument should be erected.
The motion was seconded by Kerry Independent Alliance councillor, John O’Donoghue.
