It’s hoped that Dr Maya Sharma who exposed the Kerry CAMHS scandal will open a practice in Killarney within the next two months.
As a consultant at South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Dr Sharma exposed over-medication and negligent treatment of patients.
Subsequent investigations vindicated her and found that hundreds of children were harmed or put at risk of harm.
Cllr Martin Grady says he's delighted to help Dr Sharma secure suitable premises in Killarney.
Dr Maya Sharma, who settled a lawsuit against the HSE, had been living homeless in the UK and said she’d been unable to find work because of her whistleblowing.
In an interview on Radio Kerry last month, Dr Sharma described her hope of opening a private practice for children in Killarney, which would charge on a sliding scale base based on family income.
Cllr Martin Grady says premises have been secured and that Dr Sharma’s clinic is expected to open within the next two months.
Dr Sharma says the child and adolescent mental health clinic in Killarney will provide neurodevelopmental and complex case assessments.
She hopes to build, what she describes as, a careful, compassionate and high-quality service that supports children, young people and families – one which complements rather than replaces the public system.
She thanked Cllr Martin Grady for his practical and generous help.
Dr Maya Sharma says she has a deep affection for Killarney, the national park, and the people of Kerry and that it would be privilege to contribute something positive here.
