There are calls for safety measures to be installed along an accident blackspot in South Kerry.
Fine Gael councillor Teddy O’Sullivan Casey raised the issue at the recent meeting of the Kenmare Municipal District.
Cllr Teddy O’Sullivan Casey told the meeting there had been several collisions on the N70 between Kenmare and Blackwater Bridge in recent months alone.
He said it’s a long straight road, adding there was numerous near misses at Blackwater Bridge.
He called on the council to write to Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Safety Division asking them to urgently approve the installation of speed reduction measures at the junctions for Coss Strand, Templenoe Pier and Reen Cross.
He says road markings need to be freshened up at Blackwater Bridge and he wants road signs to be erected telling motorists to ‘drive on the left hand side’ on the Sneem side of Blackwater Bridge.
In response to his motion, the council stated that the issues he raised will be examined more closely and the findings brought to the attention of the TII Safety Division with a view to implementing an appropriate intervention.
Cllr O’Sullivan Casey told the meeting he’d previously raised this before and received the same reply which was disappointing.
He stated it was only small things that they were looking for and reiterated the number of crashes and near misses that had occurred on this stretch of road.
