An Coimisiún Pleanála has upheld planning permission for an “Aire”-style motorhome park in Kenmare.
This type of park is modelled on French motorhome rest areas, with designated parking for camper vans and basic facilities for short-term stays.
The motorhome park at Reenagappal in Kenmare will have ten individual bays, marked by wooden posts.
The development will not provide water, wastewater, waste emptying, external lighting, or other services.
Kerry County Council granted planning permission to Martin Arthur for the camper park, subject to five conditions, on 15 August last year.
The council’s decision was appealed due to concerns about the waste management plan, unclear enforcement of motorhome restrictions, potential disturbance to wildlife, inadequate biosecurity measures, compliance with heritage legislation, and possible unauthorised site use.
An Coimisiún Pleanála upheld the permission, subject to eight conditions including surface water drainage, landscaping, biodiversity protection, working hours, and financial contributions.
The commission stated the development is acceptable as it would not harm local amenities, archaeology, public health, or traffic safety, and aligns with proper planning and sustainable development.
