Amnesty International says charges against Kerry man on trial in Greece are baseless and must be dropped

Amnesty International says the charges against a Kerry man are baseless and must be dropped.

Seán Binder, who grew up in Castlegregory, is one of 24 migrant rescue volunteers who stands trial in Greece today.

He faces charges including membership of a criminal organsation, money laundering, and smuggling (facilitation of irregular entry) before the Court of Appeal of Lesvos.

If convicted, Mr Binder faces up to 20-years in prison.

Amnesty International says Seán volunteered for a coastline search-and-rescue patrol for small boats in distress and to provide first aid.

Spokesperson, Laith Abu Zeyad says Seán Binder was helping people and trying to save lives:

Speaking before his court appearance, Seán Binder says the charges show that normal acts of humanity are being criminalised.
