There was been a 72% increase in people caught not wearing seat belts in Kerry.
That’s according to the latest figures by An Garda Síochána’s Fixed Charge Processing Office, released to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurcú.
In the last quarter of 2023, 53 motorists were fined for not wearing a seat belt, but this jumped to 91 in the first quarter of 2024.
Only Galway saw a greater increase at 95%.
Fines and penalty points are issued for adults not wearing a seat belt or for allowing children under 17 to travel whilst not properly restrained.
Approximately one fifth of all people killed in a vehicle were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
