A busy road in North Kerry remains closed following what's believed to be a serious incident earlier this afternoon.

It's understood one person has been seriously injured following the incident, which occurred at 20 to 2 at Caherhoona, Tarbert on the R551.

Three units of the fire service attended the scene and the main Tarbert to Ballylongford road remains closed.

It's also been confirmed that an inspector from the Health and Safety Authority is currently at the scene of the incident, which is believed to be a construction roadworks site.

Diversions are in place via Sallowglen.
