A West Kerry woman opened her back door yesterday morning to find a puffin on her doorstep.
The unusual discovery was even more extraordinary given that Elizabeth Nash lives in The Glens, Dingle - some 7 kilometres from the coast.
Elizabeth and her daughter Amelia contacted Elizabeth's sister, Rosalyn O'Connor, who works for Dingle Sea Safari, and Catherine Merrigan who works for the Office of Public Works.
Amelia also works for Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium.
Together they made a plan to have the puffin back at sea within a couple of hours.
It's believed the bird - who had no injuries - was thrown off course by fog as puffins usually stay in colonies on offshore islands.
Rosalyn O'Connor explains how it all came together.
