Cllr Robert Brosnan aired his frustration stating public car parks and spaces in Dingle town are being taken up by campervans parking illegally overnight.
Councillors in West Kerry have pled with the local authority to take action to prevent campervans staying overnight in public parking spaces.
It follows a motion from Sinn Féin councillor Robert Brosnan at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District meeting.
He tabled a motion requesting extra funding and resources to increase the council’s traffic management enforcement in Corca Dhuibhne.
Cllr Brosnan described some campers as brassneck and said they often park in bus stops overnight, or take up two spaces in the car park, so they can have a patio area with a table and chairs.
He noted a facility for campervans is needed in the area, however, he stated the current situation can’t be allowed, as these are public parking spaces for residents; and more enforcement is needed.
Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae said campervans should 100% not be parking in these areas, but if there were proper facilities in the county for campers they wouldn’t have to do this.
Fianna Fáil councillor Breandán Fitzgerald asked the council to look at a system to prevent this illegal overnight parking.
He says people and businesses in the town are being put out by this, and that extra signage and a proper overnight parking facility for campers should be explored.
In response, Kerry County Council stated a full-time traffic warned operates in Dingle town, while MD and roads enforcement officers are available to assist.
It added, it’s engaging with the County and City Management Association and Fáilte Ireland on a review of campervan policies; while, the council is working with community groups to bring forward plans for camper van sites.
