Voting stalemate results in deferment of decision to develop new Killarney car park

A vote on the proposed development of a new car park in Killarney has been deferred.

Killarney councillors are currently meeting regarding a Part 8 proposal for a new over 130-space parking development at Green Lawn, among other items.

A report from the CEO of Kerry County Council outlined that a total of 45 submissions were received during public consultation.

This included over 40 submissions from members of the public, more than 30 of which objected to the development; as well as observations from bodies including Uisce Éireann and Transport Infrastructure Ireland,

An Garda Síochána noted Mission Road already experiences high volumes of traffic and additional vehicular traffic from a new car park onto Mission Road would cause significant additional traffic and delays.

Elected members spoke for over two hours on the proposals, with concerns raised over what happens on the completion of the 15-year-lease, the reality for a multi-storey car park, while further amendments were suggested.

A proposal from independent councillor Maura Healy-Rae to remove the car park's pedestrian access onto Green Lawn from the plans, passed by four votes to three.

A second amendment vote, to remove vehicular access to Mission Road saw three councillors vote in favour, three vote against and one councillor abstain.

Cathaoirleach of the Killarney MD, independent councillor Martin Grady had the casting vote, with his voting in favour of removing access, stating that submissions from the gardaí must be taken very seriously.

He added the majority of submissions received were in objection to the car park.

After several minutes of heated debate the meeting was adjourned.

Councillors returned 32 minutes later, with the chamber advised that in light of the votes, Kerry County Council would need to consider the scheme.
