Two men in their 20s have been sentenced for what the judge called a "savage attack fueled by drink and drugs" in Killarney .
26 year old Robert Woodhead of 103 New Street Killarney and 29 year old Stephen Doherty of Kilboy, Ballyfeard, Minane Bridge, Cork both pleaded guilty to the offences.
They were charged with assault causing harm.
It happened at around ten past one on the morning (01:10am) of the 20th July 2023 at The Grand nightclub in Killarney.
The whole incident was captured on the venue's CCTV.
Dylan O'Connell was initially attacked.
Ralfs Indriksons was then assaulted when he went to the aid of his friend Mr O'Connell.
Summarising the case, Judge Alec Gabbett said that Messrs Woodhead and Doherty were equally culpable.
He described it as a "savage attack fueled by drink and drugs".
Judge Gabbett said Mr Woodhead was remorseful, had entered an early guilty plea, had given up drink and drugs, and was in full time employment.
He said that Mr Doherty had also entered an early guilty plea.
Having considered the probation reports, Judge Gabbett decided to sentence the two men to two years imprisonment each, suspended for three years.
He said he would, somewhat unusually, split the two year sentence.
The first year was suspended for the two men paying €5,000 each in compensation within three months.
The second year was suspended on the condition that the two men both serve the maximum amount of community service allowable, 240 hours.
