Survivor of reckless endangerment says she "will never hold any anger towards" man who drove over her twice

A 24-year-old woman has said she "will never hold any anger towards" the man who drove over her twice in a case of reckless endangerment.

Molly Hegarty from Kinsale in Cork presented her victim impact statement to Judge Alec Gabbett this week.

In April, a jury at Tralee Circuit Court found 26-year-old Caimin Sheedy of Rusheen, Firies guilty by a majority of 11-1.

Ms Hegarty gave a raw account of her experience, detailing how the incident has changed her life.

Ms Hegarty told the court that four years later, she still feels like she lost a huge part of herself that night, which she has never been able to get back.

She spoke of incident itself, describing how she believed she was about to die, and that she would never see her mother again, and never get to say goodbye.

She detailed the nightmares she still experiences, saying she “was awake for every second of it”, and now wakes suddenly watching the wheel coming towards her again and again.

Ms Hegarty talked of the injuries she sustained, saying her "body will never be free from pain" and that she had to be fed, washed, moved, dressed, and have her teeth brushed.

She spoke of her recovery, that her "twenties so far have been defined by pain, limitation, and constant worry", but that she had gone “from lying in a hospital bed unable to move, to walking again despite the odds.”

Ms Hegarty stated she will never hold any anger towards Mr Sheedy for what happened, and that she hopes he will try to do as much good as he can with the life he has now, as she will.

Judge Gabbett deferred sentencing to receive a probation and a GP's report.

The case was adjourned for mention on 6 October, when a sentencing date in November is expected to be fixed.

Ms Hegarty, who now lives in Spain, will be permitted to attend the sentencing hearing by video link rather than travel to Ireland, due to the ongoing pain and difficulties arising from her injuries.
