A Tralee municipal district councillor has called for the Tralee Tourist Office to be relocated.
Fianna Fáil councillor Mikey Sheehy wants the feasibility of the proposal to be explored, arguing that its current location in the Ashe Memorial Hall on Denny Street is neither prominent nor easily accessible.
Council management said that there is potential to move the Tourist Information Centre to another area within the Ashe Memorial Hall as part of its planned restoration and upgrade, but this would be contingent on agreement with Fáilte Ireland.
Councillor Sheehy believes relocating the office to a more prominent location such as Castle Street, Ashe Street, or The Mall would be beneficial.
He noted that the current kiosk tourist service on The Mall relies on volunteers and is not open full-time.
He also suggested co-locating the tourism office with the council’s tourism and marketing departments in the same building to better promote the Tralee brand.
Earlier in the meeting, Councillor Sheehy spoke about the need for better local promotion of Tralee.
He recalled attending the ISAPA 2025 conference at MTU Kerry, where over 600 delegates, including from Nairobi, Mauritius, South America, San Francisco, and Asia, were impressed by what Tralee offers.
He says they had been unaware of its appeal as a tourist destination before arriving.
Councillor Sheehy emphasised that Tralee needs to do more at a local level to promote itself, rather than relying solely on national or external agencies to advertise Tralee as a brand.
