Tralee exceeded the daily limit for pollutants in the air on five days last year.
That’s according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality in Ireland 2024 report.
The EPA report says air quality in Ireland is generally good and was compliant with 2024 air quality standards, meeting all EU legal requirements.
However, the report also notes it will be more challenging for Ireland to meet new and more stringent air quality limits that will come into force from 2030.
The EPA says clean air is essential for our health, adding around 1,700 premature deaths occur in Ireland each year because of poor air quality.
Particulate matter (PM) are tiny particles of solid or liquid suspended in the air. The EPA monitors PM10 and PM2.5, which are finer particles.
Tralee exceeded the daily limit for PM10 on five occasions last year; all these cases were in January.
Just Ennis, which breached the limit nine times, and Davitt Road in Dublin, which breached the limit six times last year, were breached the limit more times than Tralee.
Edenderry in Co Offaly also breached the limit five times last year.
The report found Killarney remained below the PM10 limit all days last year.
