Tralee charity chess tournament for Ukraine aims to beat Irish record

A charity tournament in Tralee aims to break the Irish record for the highest number of competitors to take on just one chess player.

Ukrainian chess champion Yunis Barudi studies at MTU and he hopes to compete simultaneously against at least 60 other players.

The event which will take place at MTU North Campus this Saturday will raise funds for medical rescue vehicles in Ukraine.

The tournament is organised by the Irish Chess Union, NEWKD - North East and West Kerry Development, and MTU.

The charity event also marks the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Desmond Beatty is the president of the Irish Chess Union.

He says everyone is invited to take part, and that it's not just for seasoned chess players.

He puts into context the records that MTU student Yunis Barudi hopes to beat.
