The teenage boy who died after a collision involving a tractor in mid-Kerry has been named locally.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene at Beaufort Bridge yesterday evening.
14-year-old Michael Coffey from Killarney was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road remains closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out examinations; it’s expected that the road will remain closed until later this afternoon.
Michael Coffey was out fishing with his father and a number of others in the Beaufort area yesterday evening.
The collision occurred around 7.30pm at Beaufort Bridge.
Michael Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Kerry for a post-mortem examination.
The driver of the tractor, a man aged in his 20s, wasn’t injured in the collision.
Independent councillor in the Killarney Municipal District, Martin Grady knows the Coffey family and has extended his sympathies to them.
He says the whole area is shocked and saddened; he says Michael Coffey was out fishing and enjoying the fine evening, adding it is tragic to lose such a young life.
Cllr Grady says his heart goes out to all those affected by the tragedy, including the driver of the tractor.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward; they say they particularly want to hear from those who have dash-cam footage and who were travelling in the area of Beaufort Bridge between 7pm and 7.45pm yesterday.
