The Agriculture and Food Development Authority has launched an action plan to improve the water quality for a river that rises in Sliabh Luachra.
The Blackwater Catchment Action Plan is part of the Teagasc ‘Better Farming for Water’ Campaign, and aims to encourage farmers to adopt new policies to improve water quality on their land.
Last August, up to 50,000 fish were poisoned in the River Blackwater in one of the worst incidents of its kind in the State’s history.
It's hoped that the catchment plan will encourage farmers to adopt and improve measures that reduce nutrient and sediment losses that may lead to pollution.
