A Kerry TD is calling for an urgent investigation into the mass fish kill on the River Blackwater in Cork.
It’s estimated up to 50,000 fish were poisoned in one of the worst incidents of its kind in the State’s history.
A toxic chemical spill now seems the most likely reason for the decimation of game fish such as salmon and trout, and coarse fish such as roach, dace, eels, and the small stickleback.
Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry Michael Cahill says the wipe-out of stocks will devastate tourism and angling in the region.
He’s urging the Agriculture Minister to identify the source of the pollution and prevent a repeat.
Fianna Fáil’s Tourism Spokesperson says Ireland’s pristine waters must be protected to safeguard both the environment and the economy.
