A South Kerry councillor is calling for Kerry County Council to explore the feasibility of a blueway stretching from Lough Léin in Killarney, along the River Laune through Killorglin, to Ballykissane Pier.
Blueways are designated water and land trails for activities like kayaking, walking, and cycling that promote outdoor recreation, tourism, and access to nature.
Councillor Tommy Cahill argued at the recent Kenmare MD meeting that the project could boost tourism, especially by attracting visitors from Killarney into Killorglin.
The Fianna Fáil councillor described the project as potentially "beautiful" and beneficial to the local economy and community.
Kerry County Council management responded that a blueway of this size and complexity, with connected land and water trails, would require a full assessment of funding and costs under national infrastructure guidelines.
It would also involve coordination with many stakeholders, including Waterways Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, negotiations with numerous landowners and compliance with planning regulations designed to protect sensitive natural habitats.
Management said detailed engineering would be required to ensure safety, accessibility, and good connections to local communities for both land and water users.
However, in their response, management said it would support such projects where there is no significant negative impact on the environment.
Councillor Tommy Cahill said he was disappointment at the council's response, stating that no real feasibility work appears to be planned.
