Solicitor for Kenmare murder-accused making enquiries after client appears in court with black eyes

The solicitor for Kenmare murder-accused Michael Kelley says he’s making enquiries after his client appeared in court with two black eyes this morning.

54-year-old American man Michael Kelley is accused of murdering Kenmare man Mike Gaine in March 2025.

Michael Kelley faces one charge; that he murdered Mike Gaine on a date between 20th and 21st March 2025 at Carrig, Kenmare.

He appeared in Tralee District Court this morning via video link from Cork Prison, for the state to give an update on the case.

When Mr Kelley appeared on video link, he had two black eyes.

His solicitor Pat Mann confirmed to Radio Kerry an incident occurred in the prison, the details of which are not yet clear.

Mr Mann said he is making enquiries into the incident to ascertain the details of what happened.

Mr Kelley was remanded in continuing custody to 6th May, as the book of evidence against him is not yet ready to be served on him.

The Irish Prison Service told Radio Kerry it does not comment on individual prisoner cases.
