Ireland's basking sharks will be given extra protections under new proposals being considered by Government today.

An amended wildlife bill is set to be introduced in the Dáil chamber, calling for the legal protection of the fish against 'reckless injuring or harassment'.

Basking sharks are common off the coast of Kerry, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal - this new provision would make it illegal to disturb them for reasons of wildlife tourism or recreational activities.
