The sculptor behind plans for a statue of Star Wars' character Luke Skywalker for Portmagee will be in the village this weekend to discuss his idea.

David O'Brien of Bronze Art Fine Art Foundry based in Dublin will be speaking at the May the 4th Sci-Fi Film Festival in Portmagee this Saturday and Sunday.

He wants to erect a seven-foot bronze statue of Luke Skywalker in Portmagee which would look out onto the island of Skellig Michael/ Sceilg Mhichíl where scenes for two Star Wars movies were filmed.

David O’Brien says the proposed Luke Skywalker statue for Portmagee is a non-profit venture and is raising funds for the project on GoFundMe.

He's hoping to raise €120,000 to cover material and labour costs, the construction of a stone plinth and charges associated with making a planning application.

He’s hoping the community and businesses in the Iveragh Peninsula give their support.
